Benin

The Republic of Benin is a small country in West Africa, located between Togo and Nigeria, with an area and population comparable to Portugal. The official capital is Porto Novo, although Cotonou is the seat of government and the most populous city in the country.

Like so many other African countries, it contains a great cultural and linguistic variety, being the cradle of the voodoo religion and the scene of the deportation of a million slaves during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It has several dozen ethnic groups and their corresponding languages, but the official language of the country is French, a reflection of the years in which the territory was a French colony.

The Constitution in force since 1990 established a democratic and multi-party political system.
